Winter is certainly upon us in good ol' Atchison, KS. No, we do not have beautiful snow--but ice. I am okay with ice--I am okay with it because it means that Global Warming has not yet completely destroyed our environment yet. I mentioned this is one of my classes today--to which some ignorant person responded "Why should I care about global warming? I'm not in Biology." At first I thought he was joking--I soon realized he was being sincere. So, I took a moment to breathe, to keep myself from answering him in an untactful or unchristian-like manner-which was difficult, I'll admit. I asked him if he wanted to have kids--of course he responded 'yes.' It was from there that I pointed out reasons he should care--they were reasonss that directly concerned him personally--but apparently that was the only way he would care, if it bothered him---so I went with it. To want to save the world for selfish reasons is better than having him not want to save the world at all--but I am very apalled it came to those reasons in our conversation. The concept of Global Warming is quite scary to me, as it should be to all of us. What is even more terrifying is that unless the majority of us clean up our acts (literally) and work together, there is not a whole lot we can do about it. Basically, we are all putting our lives, our family's lives, and all those in the younger generations in the hands of our politicians to acknowledge this is a problem and set the standards, and our fellow human beings to follow them---now that is scary, especially when some think it is only a problem that will pertain to those in the sciences. But today, as I fought the cold winds all the way to class, I did not curse it as I have in the past-- I welcomed it because it was a little breath of hope for the future! So---step outside---slide on the ice--eat some snow--enjoy the winter--it's a good thing.
Picture: Last year Vicki and I went and made snow angels on campus--in our PJs--it was quite a fun time. I cannot wait for snow this year to have some more fun--snow angels in ice doesn't quite work!
